Stand up to cyberbullying
- Teens (13-17 years old) - 1 in 4 cyberbullied in their lifetime
- Tweens (9-12 years old) - 1 in 6 cyberbullied in their lifetime
Signs to look for
- Stops using phone, or acts nervous while on it
- Becomes secretive about online activity
- Seems agitated or depressed after being online 鈥� especially while gaming
- Plus, common indicators of bullying: decrease/increase in sleep or appetite, depression, talk of suicide, and social withdrawal.
What should you do if your child is being cyberbullied?
- Document all related activity 鈥� including dates and times, and methods. Consider printing copies of the offending events
- Report immediately 鈥� to school and, if needed, local police
- Avoid escalation 鈥� DO NOT RESPOND to bullies. Instead, block the sender from sending additional messages.
What can you do now?
- Set guidelines for online activity 鈥� and monitor regularly
- Watch for signs of cyberbullying 鈥� catching it quickly can accelerate recovery
- Remain communicative 鈥� so your children can turn to you if they are being cyberbullied, or see it happening
